People-carriers or MPVs (Multi-Purpose Vehicles) come in all shapes and sizes - and some are more multi-purpose than others.
But you don't need to opt for a huge Renault Espace or Chrysler Voyager: there are well-designed smaller MPVs that offer plenty of room and even seven-seat versatility while being considerably cheaper to buy and run.
Here are five of the best.
1. Citroen C4 Picasso
Citroen dominates the compact MPV sector: the C4 Picasso outsells its nearest rivals by a massive margin.
Not that it's really a 'compact' MPV: it can now be specified with an extended wheelbase and third row of seats (the Grand C4 Picasso) and it's not short on interior space. Its airy, soft-touch cabin comes well-equipped and - even with all rear seats in place - there's plenty of boot-space.
The 1.6 HDI diesel (110bhp) delivers 47.9mpg, but is far more expensive than the 1.6 VTi petrol models. New list prices start from £13,995, but Citroen is always running incentives, cashback schemes and money-off promotions. Given these, there's no point in opting for the elderly Xsara Picasso, still on sale for a few grand less.
